England > tracymar  > Other > The Cotswolds, English country villages
A day tour of the Cotswolds - Castle Combe, Bibury, Upper Slaughter, Stow-on-the-Wold and Tetbury - picturesque villages which still retain their 18th-19th century look. I love the flowers on and around the cottages, and the Cotswold oolitic limestone walls of houses, which absorb sunlight and become honey gold.

tracymar > Castle Combe, 12 miles from Bath, has been voted the "prettiest village in England" many times. It was an active weaving center and marketplace for centuries.
tracymar > The honey-colored limestone of the Cotswolds was plentiful in the local quarries. The color of the stone varies in different quarries, but it usually has a golden glow when the sun shines upon it.
tracymar > This row of houses is on the main street of Castle Combe.
tracymar > In the center of Castle Combe is a 14th century Market Cross. Perishable items were sold by merchants on the raised platform so that the rats which roamed the streets would not reach them.

tracymar > Another row of cottages. The original Dr. Doolittle and the more recent film Stardust were filmed here.
tracymar > Many homes and businesses, such as this restaurant in the center of the village, are adorned with flowers.
